Christian-Eric Falardeau has written an entertaining book about species throughout the galaxy bent on destroying themselves. Lucky for them, there is a group named The Alas League who saves the survivors by placing them in created habitats until such time that geneticists can correct their self-destructive behavior.

This is a creative story line that begs for future episodes. Unfortunately, I had to get through the first 20-30 pages of the first episode to start enjoying the story. The language was stuffy, used unnecessarily complex vocabulary and stuffed too many concepts into many of those first paragraphs. Falardeau's description of Peter's awakening was particularly difficult to get through. It was also distracting to have Peter's name change from Peter to Pierre and back again. As the book progressed though, Falardeau's writing style loosened up and the story became more interesting and easy to read.

Give it a chance though. Falardeau uses amusing and ridiculous word pairings for names of characters such as 'Phyerhiderant' who is the humans' Alas League liaison. Unfortunately, he has mistaken the pet dog Fido as the primary surviving species on earth. I'm sure we'll read more about how that mistake impacts the humans' predicament. Let's see what the next episode brings.
